The Churchill Park Winter Carnival returns as part of the City of Hamilton's Winterfest week-long celebrations.

Help us reach 30 mentors by January 30th and help 30 Burlington Youth reach their full potential.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington has recently launched a Burlington specific volunteer recruitment campaign to help address the immediate needs of 30 boys currently waiting for a Big Brother. The hope is not only to recruit male volunteers, but also to start a conversation in Burlington about the difference a mentor can make in the life of a child.

Here is how you can help:

1) If you are a mentor, share your story with your colleagues, friends and family. Encourage them to give back to the children and youth in Burlington by mentoring.

2) If you are not a mentor, take some time and look over our website. In addition to one-to-one mentoring, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers various opportunities for mentoring in group settings. The agency works with each individual volunteer to help find the most suitable program.

Congratulations to Big Sister Karrie Capp and her little sister, Irene, for their winning submission to the National Big Brother Big Sister logo contest. Apparently the creativity of this Big and Little sister match extends well beyond the wonderful cakes that they decorate together. The pair won $100 in gas gift certificates – something they will be sure to use over the upcoming holidays.

Celebrate the Holidays at Ikea!

BBBS is gearing up to 'man’ the Christmas Tree Lot at Ikea Burlington from late November until the treees are sold. This means we need volunteers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day from November 25th to December 23rd.

We will be breaking up each day into shifts and we will accommodate any schedule. Volunteers will be responsible for verifying receipts (customers pay $20 inside, then bring receipt to the lot), giving out Ikea coupons (every tree purchaser receives a $20 Ikea coupon) and helping to pick out and load trees.

BBBS will receive $1 from every tree sold! This is a great volunteer opportunity for high school/college/university students (must be 16+ or accompanied by an adult), corporate/community groups or as a day of family fun! You will also receive unlimited hot chocolate and coffee.

It was with great pleasure that Big Brothers Big Sisters celebrated its’ grand re-opening on Monday November 7th, 2011.

Over the past 18 months, with the help from the corporate and community supporters listed below, the agency has been able to make much needed building improvements inside and out. The building, located at 639 Main Street East in Hamilton houses administrative and recreational space for mentoring programs and the community. A dedication plaque was unveiled during the event which reads “This building is dedicated to all who believe in the value and values of mentoring. Bigs and Littles, volunteers and donors – past, present and future, this building salutes you.”

We are asking matches to work together to create and submit their interpretation of our Big Brothers Big Sisters logo using the artistic medium of their choice. Whether that be finger-painting, clay, wood, building blocks, crayons, collage, graphic design – we want to see it!

The contest opens up today and runs until Nov 7. Please encourage Bigs and their Littles to post their creations on our Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Facebook page. All contest details are listed there (click CONTEST in the menu.

Thanks to the Jays Care Foundation 35 youth from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington enjoyed Club Seats at a recent Jays home game. They were treated to lots of food and fun as the Jays came away with the victory. For many of the youth it was their first time enjoying a Blue Jays game from the club seats. You can see more detail on our website, but our first ever BOSL Poker Tournament is coming up soon. Saturday, August 13th. It’s for TWO great causes – Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Nelson Youth Centre. Very inexpensive as far as poker tourneys go. $75.00 which includes Gator Ted’s food during the night. Major cash prizes and also a raffle that night for a foursome of golf at a fancy golf course.

Spots are filling up super quick, so it’s best to register/pay online for sure. I doubt there’ll be the chance to do so at the door as it’s a first-pay/first-in type of deal.

Promise Scholarship Program
The Promise Scholarship is awarded to 10 students in Grade 7 as a promise that if they keep up their commitment to academics, the community and themselves, we will be there to offer financial assistance when they enter post secondary school. Unlike other scholarships (which are typically awarded at the end of high school), we offer the message of hope and promise early in a child's academic life. When a child is accepted into a post secondary institution, we advocate on the child's behalf to receive matching scholarship funds.

With the summer season almost upon us, and cottage and camping season well underway, the staff at Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to take this opportunity to remind you of our overnight policy.

Overnights are permitted, for each friendship, a total of four times in a twelve month period, and each overnight is allowed to last a maximum of 3 nights in a row. Overnights are not permitted to occur outside of Canada and all participants wishing to have an overnight outing, must first complete an overnight permission form. These forms can be mailed (or emailed) to you, by your Case Manager.

We have two discount consignment ticket opportunities this summer for volunteers, families and staff of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The first is for Bingemans in Kitchener and the second is for the CNE. Below is the information necessary to purchase these tickets online.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is proud to announce close to $100,000 was raised through our Tim Horton’s Bowl for Kids Sake campaign. This event ensures children in this community receive the support, opportunities, and guidance needed to reach their full potential.

2011 Go Girls Golf on Friday August 19th at Flamborough Hills.

Our Golf Classic, now in its 19th year, will include lunch, 18 holes of golf and a fabulous dinner, all at Copetown Woods. This tournament offers great prizes and an exceptional live and silent auction, with many unique experiences and packages, as well as exclusive sports memorabilia. Proceeds from this event funds mentoring programs in our community.

Our Go Girls! tournament is perfect if you are a pro, occasional or beginner golfer. This ladies-only event includes a 9-hole tournament, lunch and a perfect opportunity to have fun with your friends, family and/or co-workers. The money from this event helps to fund Go Girls!, a program that supports, inspires and empowers adolescent girls to make healthy life choices.
Your participation in our tournaments over the past few years has supported hundreds of children in our community. Through your support, new mentoring friendships were made, new recreational and educational opportunities were offered and new programming within the community was delivered. Your involvement brought us closer to our goal of ‘every child who needs a mentor, has a mentor’. Your participation this year will help Big Brothers Big Sisters support over 1,000 current friendships, find friends for the 150 children still on our waiting list and expand our programs in the community and the school system.

The Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore is proud to present the first annual Burlington Kidfest. Kidfest is a fun-filled entertainment extravaganza. Tell a friend Justin White and his Big Brother Greg Sinasac are a perfect match.

“Every time Greg’s mom catches me dipping into the cookie jar in the kitchen, she says, ‘OK, Greg,’” laughed the 13-year-old Stoney Creek resident. “My Big Brother’s awesome.” For Greg, the feeling is mutual.

“I have two older sisters and have always wanted a little brother to just hang out with and play sports with,” said the 23-year-old, who lives in Binbrook. “It’s great because Justin’s like a miniature version of me.” Justin and Greg were introduced through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington’s Traditional Match program in January 2008.

The program includes Big Brothers, Sisters, Couples and Families.

Volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of six and 18.

The Big and Little spend two to three hours, once a week participating in low-cost activities.

“Justin was referred to our agency by his mother,” said Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington representative Laura Hickerson. “Greg was chosen as a good match for Justin because of his high energy, his close proximity to Justin’s house and his unique interests.”

When Justin and Greg aren’t baking, cooking or getting into flour fights in the kitchen, they attend church and sporting events.

The pair have mountain biked on a variety of off road trails and even built a tree fort in the woods by Greg’s house.

Justin and Greg also spend countless hours crafting things out of wood.

“I didn’t know what woodworking was until Greg introduced me to it. Now I love it,” said Justin. “I’ve learned a lot of things from him. It’s awesome having someone to really look up to and just have fun with.” Greg said hanging out with Justin is a “blast.” “It’s great knowing that I can help him too. We’re pretty close, so we talk about a lot of things,” he said. “As much as it might seem like he’s the one that gets a lot out of it, I get a lot from it too. He makes me laugh and is just a really good kid and that’s why I do it.” Justin’s mother, Terry White, is grateful for Greg and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington.

“Greg’s whole personality is phenomenal. He’s there for Justin in every way, whether they’re just hanging out or Justin needs someone to talk to, and if there is a concern Greg knows to give me the heads up too,” she said. “You couldn’t have asked for a better guy. I would recommend it (Big Brothers Big Sisters Traditional Match program) to anybody.” Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington offers other mentoring programs as well.

Social Opportunities Activities and Relationships (SOAR) is a group mentoring program, which provides children currently waiting for a Big Brother or Sister the opportunity to participate in social, recreational and educational activities.

A volunteer accompanies one or two children to a pred e t e r m i n e d c o m m u n i t y activity one evening a week.

Activities include open gym nights, laser tag, bowling, crafts/woodworking, skating and swimming.

“(Children waiting for a Big Brother or Sister), together with other volunteers and children, can have fun and build friendships,” said Hickerson, adding there are about 26 children/youth in Stoney Creek and east Hamilton currently waiting for a Big Brother or Sister.

“This program is not only great for the kids, but also a great volunteer opportunity. It allows the volunteer to meet great people, have fun in the community and positively impact the life of a child.” Justin is already hoping to one day return the favour to another child.

“I’ll probably be a Big Brother too,” he said. “Big Brothers Big Sisters is an awesome organization.

Reach Glee Club

Reach, is a place where children who get joy out of singing will have the opportunity to explore their passion and socialize through music. Children who attend the club will have the option of performing in front of their parents but will attend the club for the sole purpose of singing for enjoyment. By attending Reach, children will enhance their social skills, teamwork skills, and possibly leadership skills. Although developing certain skills is an important aspect of Reach, ensuring every child explores their creativity and learns to be more confident in their abilities is the greater goal.
Target music: Popular songs that are age appropriate and are from a variety of genres; kids will be given options and therefore will be involved in choosing the songs.
Where will the club take place? To be determined; McMaster University is a possible location.
When will the club take place? Saturdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 5th- April 2nd.Costs: This club will be free for any child who wishes to attend.

A HUGE thank you to Jumpstart for all they do for the kids at Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington.

Since 2005 when Jump Start was piloted in the Niagara region, Jump Start has grown nation wide and has provided a number of Little Brothers Little Sisters with opportunities of sport and recreation. Jump Start is a registered charity that helps financially disadvantaged families in times of need to get kids involved within their community with a the goal of keeping kids active.

Research has proven that participation in sport and recreation does increase a child’s chance of success in life through:

• A healthier lifestyle;
• Increased self-esteem and confidence;
• Opportunity to learn important leadership skills;
• Improved school performance and future education expectations;
• More positive relationships and strengthened support networks.

Any current client of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington may be eligible for funding of a sport or recreational program. Funding will only be granted for one activity per season per child (Spring-Summer) or (Fall – Winter). A maximum grant amount of $300.00 may be available which should be considered in choosing the activity / sport of choice.

Applications for funding are to be completed by the parent and they are available at any time by contacting the Case Manager/ Worker who will lead you through the process. The first submission for Spring and Summer 2011 programs will be March 1st then the 1st of each month ending on June 24th 2011. Submission for Fall 2011 – Winter 2011-2012 will be accepted starting in July 2011 and ending on October 31st 2011.

With the help of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Hamilton & Burlington chapter Jason and Bazil found one another.

Jason had been told by his brother about the shortage of Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the Hamilton and Burlington area. There just weren’t enough adults to mentor the young population in need.

So at the age of 31 Jason decided to give back to the community and became a Big Brother at the Big Brother Big Sister organization in Hamilton, ON. That is when he was matched with his 13 year old “little brother” Bazil.

Bazil, who is originally from Zimbabwe, does not have any siblings at home. Before meeting Jason he often found that he was alone and did not get involved in many activitie that is where Jason came to the rescue for young Bazil.

Bazil has been able to learn all about hockey, web designing and traveling from his big brother. Jason has taught his little brother how to rollerblade, which has become one of Bazil’s favorite pass times during the summer. Skating has not been isolated to pavement for these two. One of Jason’s favorite memories is when he took Bazil ice skating for the first time ever. Despite being from a warm climate, Bazil loved ice-skating!

It isn’t all fun and games for this pair. Jason has also been able to be a mentor for Bazil. Particularly with math, Jason has been able to help his little brother through his struggles with fractions.

Bazil’s favorite part of having Jason as his big brother is having someone to turn to when he is having a problem. He has someone he can relate to and trust to give him good advice.

When asked what being a Big Brother meant to Jason, this is what he had to say:.

“I really enjoy having Bazil as a Little brother. After 9 months of spending time together, I find that he is opening up more and more each time we meet up. Generally, he is a quiet and shy child to people he is not familiar with. But once you get to know him you see a side of him that is inquisitive, thoughtful and active. What's interesting is that our relationship involves mutual exchange of teaching and learning. I remember the first day we got together, we went to the library and sat in front of the computer where he began introducing me to the various types of transport trucks. He began naming the make and model of each transport truck and what the difference between each were. I remember thinking, "wow I'm learning so much, shouldn't I be the one to pass on knowledge to him?". You can tell he has a passion for transport trucks. I recently asked him what he liked most about having me in his life and he responded saying that he liked having someone he can turn to besides his mother. He has a sister who is married and lives in Hamilton and another sister who lives in England so to connect with them is difficult. I was surprised to hear what an impact I have had in the time we've been together but to have him articulate it meant a great deal to me. I got involved with the BBBS looking to help out but I never thought my life could be enriched the way that it has been.”

This pair is a great example of how important it is for a young person to have a positive role model in their life. All it takes a little bit of your time to make a world of difference.

BIG CHANGES AT BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS

We are delighted to share the news that our Hamilton office is currently under construction and things are looking GREAT! Thanks to a grant from the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario under the infrastructure initiative we have had the opportunity to upgrade our Hamilton location to ensure that it is a safe and healthy environment for our volunteers, clients and staff and a facility that they can be proud of.

The implications in the immediate future are that we have closed the coach house from use by our volunteers on an individual basis. Your key no longer works! At the present time, with all the construction it is not a safe place to bring children. We will be announcing in the near future a new and updated coach house use policy.

Watch for our grand re-opening and re-dedication ceremonies coming upon completion of the renovations.

Office visits and group programming will not be affected by this change in coach house use.

Congratulations to our golf committee who led and celebrated a successful tournament in June. Your work on behalf of the children in our programs is very much appreciated. Also thanks to the work of our staff, and summer staff our Summer Buddies program was a resounding success.

The Board of Directors of this agency has engaged with staff and volunteers to complete a new strategic plan in the fall of 2010 which will be the roadmap for this organization into the future. We are excited about this promising new look at our organization.

In November of this year our organization will complete an accreditation process through our National Organization, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada. As a volunteer or parent you may be called on to answer questions relative to your experience as a program participant. Calls will be placed randomly to both families and volunteers.

The Ministry of Health Promotion and the Healthy Community Fund has granted Big Brothers Big Sisters two year funding to support our newest program Game On! Game On will be formatted similarly to our popular Go Girls program which runs two one-hour sessions each week for duration of seven to ten weeks. The sessions take place in selected schools and focus on physical activity, healthy eating/nutrition and self-esteem/communication skills. With the support of the Healthy Communities Fund this program will begin in the fall of 2010.

Kim is a new case manager to the agency, and has a small case load. She screens and interviews both families and volunteers. As well, Kim will work with the Go Girls program while Lisa is on maternity leave.

Michelle has been with Big Brothers Big Sisters for nineteen years. She is a Case Worker in the traditional program. Michelle says that the best part of her job is when she calls a Little to tell them that she has a Big waiting for them. Michelle loves the relationship part of being a Case Manager.
Michelle is a full-time mom of two who loves spending time with her husband and kids. Michelle wants to make a difference by having an impact on the lives of children by providing great mentors where enriching, life changing experiences happen.

Miriam echos the vision of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada—whose own vision is that every child who needs a mentor gets a mentor. Laura has been in the Not for Profit world for over fifteen years and joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters team in July 2006. As Director of Services Greg’s responsibilities are varied but none more important than the oversight of the program offerings ensuring that the delivery of our services are in compliance with Big Brother Big Sister of Canada child safety standards and BBBS of Hamilton & Burlington governing policies.

Greg’s first exposure to Big Brothers Big Sisters occurred in February 1979 when he was hired by a discrete Big Sister agency in Welland to work as a Parents Group Coordinator. Not soon after he was matched to his first Little Brother. In 1989 Greg was hired as the Executive Director of Big Brothers of South Niagara. Michael remains a huge part of his life and that of his family and for that he has been truly blessed.

For Big Brothers Big Sisters Greg sees a period of program innovation coming forward creating partnerships with like minded groups to capture those who may be overlooked by current service offerings..

Marianne Noakes is the agency Executive Director a position she has held since coming to Hamilton in 1999. Marianne’s career with BBBS has spanned over 30 years, within four different communities and with progressively changing roles.

Marianne and husband Greg have two grown children, Sarah who has followed her mother’s footsteps in the social service sector and Jordan who is currently teaching in Taiwan. The Noakes are soon to be first time grandparents (says Marianne with a delighted smirk!).

In terms of a vision for the organization, Marianne feels strongly that we need to move the organization to a “centre for mentoring excellence” position in the community so that we can share and lead in the process of ensuring that every child who needs a mentor is greeted with the news that a special friend has been found just for them. In order to move to this positioning we need to create new synergies with organizations who are serving kids in the communities of Hamilton and Burlington.

Thank to you the Hamilton Community Foundation's Youth and Philanthropy Program. Under the Youth-led Community Action Program, current Co-op Students will launch a Co-op Mentoring Recruitment Campaign. Funds will be used to help encourage high school students to enter the co-op program and become In-School Mentors. Current Co-op Students will create display boards, brochures and share their mentoring experiences with other students. Thank you Hamilton Community Foundation for supporting this endeavor.

As I am writing this, we as a nation are celebrating national volunteer week. Did you know that there are over 12.5 million volunteers in Canada?
National Volunteer Week is a special time set aside in April to honour the people who donate their time and energy. The week also raises awareness of the vital contributions volunteers make to our communities.

From coast to coast, volunteer involvement enriches our community’s one act at a time.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters we know the individual impact one person can have on another human being. At Big Brothers Big Sisters please know that your volunteer commitment is inspiring, important and life changing.

As promised, I am going to continue to put to print articles featuring questions I have been asked since our last publication. These days it seems as though I am continually being asked, "how will the uncertain economy effect Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington"? My first response "we continue to focus on what we do best, matching young people with caring adult mentors”. As a volunteer-driven organization we are continuing to recruit, train and provide ongoing professional support to foster the success of our mentoring relationships. Are we doing business differently? Yes we are.
We are finding ourselves needing to be more creative and resourceful in the way we operate. It is our responsibility to always be evaluating and paying attention to our efficiencies. Unfortunately, the reduction in available funds and the ever growing need to place mentors in the lives of children has resulted in a much higher caseload per worker. We continue to explore and utilize students and other means to continue to reach out where possible, but some of the feedback I am getting is that we are at times frustrating our membership with so very many changes. Every child, family and volunteer mentor within our organization has been assigned a service team staff member as your key contact. Others from our staff, student or volunteer compliment may be in touch from time to time, but a service staff member remains your primary contact.
I believe that now more than ever before the children and youth in our community need mentorship to give them hope for the future. At BBBS of Hamilton and Burlington we are incredibly fortunate to have the support we do from our dedicated and passionate volunteers, as well as from our committed and steadfast donors.
Together we will weather this storm of uncertain times; the children in our program are counting on it!

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton & Burlington has numerous events planned for the next couple of months. The success of these events is largely dependant on the assistance of volunteers.
These events include;
1. Thursday March 4, McMaster Bowl for Kids Sake, Mountain Lanes 6-8pm
2. Saturday March 6, Bowl for Kids Sake –PrimeTime Bowling Burlington 12 - 5pm
3. Saturday March 13, BFKS – Skyway Lanes- Hamilton 12-5pm
4. Sunday March 14, BFKS – Sherwood Lanes 6-9pm
5. Friday March 19 Stars Academy Concert- Burlington 8pm to close
Volunteers are needed to assist with a third party event that involves at least four
local bands, this is a licensed event, you must be 19yrs of age.
6. Friday March 26, BFKS – Roseland Bowl- Burlington 4-8pm
7. Saturday March 27, BFKS – Skyway Lanes- Hamilton 11-6pm
Wednesday March 31, BFKS – PrimeTime Bowling- Burlington 5-8pm

A warm thank you to our volunteers, who season after season are making a difference in the lives of children throughout Hamilton and Burlington.How can you continue to help? Forward the link for this blog to a friend and tell them you think they would make a great mentor. It is the spreading of the word about Big Brothers Big Sisters by our members that is our most successful recruitment tool. In this blog you will find information on H1N1. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hamilton and Burlington we have made the conscious decision not to impose a policy, but rather, to ask our families and volunteers to use their best judgment in terms of whether or not to have their regular contact with their match. In other words, please use good judgment and act on the side of caution if you are concerned about having the flu or being exposed to anyone with flu like symptoms. We are VERY excited to announce the release of our new – state of the art website. Watch for our launch over the next month. Eventually that area was turned into a recreation centre for members and thus called the “coach house”. When this building was erected, the members of the day wanted to keep our history alive and we named the recreation area downstairs “the coach house” in tribute to our humble beginnings. Every Big Brother and Big Sister in our traditional match has a key to the coach house and you are free to make use of this recreational space, with your little, at your leisure. The coach house is also home to our SOAR programs as well as training for Go Girls and Co-op High School mentoring.WHAT ARE THE CURRENT PROGRAM EXPANSION GOALS? Yes, we are growing. Our goal is to provide mentoring services to each child that comes forward in need of a mentor. In order to do this we continue to attempt new approaches, while maintaining our strict screening and selection process for volunteers. In January 2010 we hope to be in a position to offer a second SOAR program in Burlington as well as expanding our Go Girls! program to Burlington area schools.

Concession Program for Matches - When a match is made between a Big and Little, they are given a concession pamphlet that entitles them to some special treats or events. Our thanks to our Sponsors & community friends.

Group Activities and Outings – Offered 4-6 times per year, for example we have group activities and outings. We will always put these on the activity line, where you will be required to leave your name and phone number if you wish to attend. Some one will get back to you as soon as possible.

Computer and Bike Give Away Days - Usually twice a year we at Big Brothers Big Sisters are given computers and some bikes. When that happens, we will put it on the activity line so that you can register for these programs.

Summer fun – Some of the summer fun this year is a program called Summer Buddies where the Littles get to spend some time with a mentor at one of our community schools for a period of one week from Monday to Friday from 9:00am to 4:00 pm. We also have Ti-Cat tickets, and a fishing event.

Coach House- Once you have been matched, your caseworker will give your Big a key to the Coach House. In the Coach House, there are different games, like a pool table, foosball table, along with other things to do.

Tickets, Tickets, Tickets – Please call the activity line at 905-525-3860 x 3 where you will find a listing of different activities. Leave your name and phone number for the activity that you would like to do and someone will get back to you.

Summer Buddies Throughout the summer months, students from the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the YMCA Summer Opportunities Program are matched in 1:2 mentoring relationships with our unmatched children. Together with other matches, they actively participate in relationship building activities and ‘old time summer fun’.

Community Matching program offers services to children aged seven to 18 years, mostly from single parent families. They are matched with individual volunteers, or with volunteer couples or families. Our traditional matching program is a one adult, one volunteer program.
Couples and Family Matching program is designed much like our Community Matching Program. However, Couples and Families volunteer together to provide friendship to a child.

In School Mentoring program provides services to children who have been identified by school personnel as being "at risk" of not achieving their full potential. These children may be struggling with socialization skills and/or are lacking in self-esteem, and may be more likely to drop out of school. This program brings together business, education and volunteer sectors to promote the social, emotional and educational well-being of children. It involves a one-to-one relationship between an adult and a child who meet weekly on school premises. This program is designed for boys and girls and uses both male and female volunteers. We collaborate with both the Public and Catholic School Boards for this program in Hamilton and Burlington.

Child Safety and Empowerment program is offered to clients, parents and volunteers. It provides tools and education in the area of child safety with a focus on the prevention of child sexual abuse. This program encourages the safety of our clients and families, at home and in the community.

Promise Scholarship and Project Hope Initiatives provide motivational tools and financial assistance to encourage children to pursue post-secondary education.

In partnership with the Canadian Tire Jump Start program, our agency identifies children in need who would benefit from participating in an organized sport or recreational activity and could not ordinarily do so without assistance. The agency disburses funds to the appropriate service provider to cover the cost of registration. Consideration is also given to fund equipment and transportation costs.

SOAR (Social Opportunities, Activities, and Relationships) is a group program with separate programs for girls and boys waiting to be matched with Big Brothers or Big Sisters. Volunteers provide learning and recreational activities for children and youth. Areas of focus are Special Events, Recreation, Sports, Personal Development, Employment and Volunteer Work in the Community. Each volunteer is matched with a few children who meet with other SOAR volunteers and children as a group for two hours a week over a 12-week period. In 2008/09 we had four groups running; SOAR for Girls, Soar for Boys both Junior and Senior and SOAR UPS for a special group of Burlington kids.

The Go Girls! Program provides girls and young women with information and support to make informed choices about healthy, active living while maintaining sensitivity toward the emotional, social and cultural issues they may face. Specifically, the project addresses the issues of physical activity, balanced eating and positive self-image for youth participants between the ages of 12 and 14 through mentoring relationships.

All of our service volunteers are screened and trained by Big Brothers Big Sisters professional staff. Our case managers and caseworkers provide ongoing monitoring and relationship support for children and volunteers. The families we serve receive support services and encouragement from our professional staff.
